Pilates for Men

pilatesmen_200Pilates is often wrongly thought of as an exercise regime for women.  Joseph Pilates was a man and created his method for men, with the first practitioners being soldiers.  Men’s physical structures are different from women such as a smaller pelvis, tighter hips and generally tighter hamstrings.  With the ageing process, many men are no longer able to perform the exercises they once did when younger.  Men who weight train in the gym often bulk up leading to a lack of flexibility. This can explain why some men may experience stiffness and back pain as they age.  Pilates exercises increase mobility, making the body supple, whilst being gentle on the joints.  Golfers, footballers, athletes, cricketers and other sportsmen now use Pilates to build core strength, which helps improve their sport and assists in injury prevention.  Combined with a good diet and cardiovascular exercise, Pilates can assist in getting rid of the dreaded belly fat. Strength, posture, stamina, flexibility and vitality are all improved.
